Lately, it seems that my 7-year old, Rachel, has been providing me with a constant stream of material. I really should just be carrying around a notebook so I don't forget all the little gems I hear from her on a daily basis.
This past weekend, Rachel burst into the living room where my wife and I were talking and exclaimed (interrupting, I might add) "THERE ARE EMJAS IN THE YARD!"
Not knowing what an "emja" was, and just a touch annoyed that she had interrupted us AGAIN without it being an emergency, I non-the-less asked her to repeat what she said.
"NINJAS!" She exclaimed, again. She couldn't possibly mean actual ninjas in the yard, I thought, but if she was right, clearly an emergency existed that DID merit interrupting our conversation!
"What did you say?" I asked a third time.
"Ninjas, Dad", she said, "There are three of them in the back yard!"
This was a crisis! I've seen ninjas on TV, but never expected them in my yard. In fact, there are a lot of things on TV I never expect to find in my yard. Ninjas are just one of them. A battleship is another.
"Where are they?", I asked. I was actually a lot more curious about what the ninjas were doing, but first things first, right?
"On the bird feeders", she said.
I slowed down my pace a bit. Ninjas on the bird feeders didn't sound right...or a crisis after all. I was happy with a non-ninja, non-crisis, to be honest.
"Ninjas on the bird feeder? Are you sure that is right?" I asked her.
"Yeah! She replied, her excitement non-diminished. "Those super-bright yellow ninjas!"
Aaaaaahhhhhhhh.
"Do you mean finches?", I asked?
"Yeah, finches. That's what I meant."
Thank goodness.
I suppose if she ever yells "finches" you're in Big-Trouble-in-Little-China kinda trouble :)

Hillarious --> " In fact, there are a lot of things on TV I never expect to find in my yard. Ninjas are just one of them. A battleship is another."

Thank goodness indeed. The difference between the two equals heart failure or not...
